From NCAA sidelines to pro benches in Sweden and China, to camps and clinics on five continents — a coaching life built on fundamentals.
A Coaching Career Across Three Continents
Rick Walrond has spent more than 28 years coaching basketball, and founded the Basketball Fundamentals Academy in Daytona Beach, Florida, to teach the skills he has built his career on.
He spent eight years as the winningest coach at the University of South Carolina–Salkehatchie, leading the program to an NJCAA Region 10 Runner-up finish (1988–96). He then spent four years as a player and coach in Division I Sweden, playing and coaching in Ryd and Köping.
His coaching took him into China's professional system, including a stint with the Zhejiang Wanma Basketball Club in Hangzhou. Back in the United States, he served as an NCAA Division I assistant coach at Stetson University and Bethune-Cookman University.
Rick was also an assistant coach at Barton College (District 26 Champions, Final 16), Coastal Carolina, Roanoke College (ODAC regular season & tournament champions, Mid-Atlantic Region Final 8), and UNC-Pembroke (Carolinas Conference Runner-up). Earlier in his career, he was a high school head coach in North Carolina, winning three conference championships in four years at Williamston HS and SW Onslow HS.
He holds an M.Ed. from the University of South Carolina and a B.A. from North Carolina Methodist University, with graduate work completed at Pembroke State and Lynchburg College.

Coach Rick builds every camp, clinic, and individual session around the player in front of him — customized workouts by individual need, not a one-size-fits-all script. The focus stays on physical and mental growth together: work habits, teamwork, and leadership, alongside footwork, shooting, and ball skills.
